COMPETITIVE youngsters fought for a place at the Berkshire School Games Finals in a hockey competition on Monday.

Altwood School hosted 14 teams of 10 and 11-year-olds from eight primary schools across Maidenhead to find the team who will represent the area in the county-wide final.

Emma Fitzgerald, development manager of the Ascot and Maidenhead school sport partnership, who organised the competition, said: "The hockey facility at Altwood is first class, and their links to local club Maidenhead are a winning combination.

"We can’t wait to take our strongest teams to the Berkshire School games finals next year”

Sports leadership students at Altwood School co-ordinated the competition after receiving training and advice form the Maidenhead Hockey Club.

All matches were umpired by year 10 students who are members of the Olympic council, young ambassadors and some AS PE students.

Miss Fitzgerald added: “I would like to thank Altwood School for organising this competition and providing a team of outstanding Leaders, who are such strong role models for the younger children."

After all the games were played, the team from St Edmund Campion Catholic Primary School was named the winner and the runner up was Courthouse Junior School.
