A FORMER councillor will not be prosecuted for remarks he made about travellers - despite two referrals by police to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Superintendent Kate Ford, police commander for Windsor and Maidenhead, has confirmed that police had lost an appeal to the Crown Prosecution Service to reconsider its decision to take no action against former Conservative councillor Alan Mellins.

Mr Mellins stood down as the Royal Borough’s Cox Green representative after apologising for remarks made during a public meeting, at which the subject of evicting illegally camped travellers was discussed. He has also been suspended by the Conservative group.

Mr Mellins was not arrested but later made a voluntary statement to police which led to the report being sent to the Crown Prosecution Service.
