A THEME park has backtracked in a row over the traffic chaos a redevelopment would cause after stating it would ensure 'new visitors are attracted’.

Legoland proposals to redevelop the Pirate Training Camp area of the Winkfield Road park have been recommended for approval by council planning chiefs ahead of a meeting of Windsor Urban Development Control Panel on Wednesday (4/11), despite more than 15 objections from residents concerned about traffic.

The initial application stated: “The replacement and new attractions will enhance the visitor experience ensuring existing visitors are encouraged to return to the park and that new visitors are attracted.” However, an amendment states: “...there will be no impact on traffic as a result of the proposed replacement of an existing feature at Legoland.” The proposal was hauled before the panel by councillor Geoff Hill, cabinet member for highways and transport, due to concerns even more traffic would clog up the roads around the park after a summer of misery for residents.

However, following the amendment Cllr Hill said he has no objection to the plan. He said: “The concerns are no longer there. We are comfortable with the proposal. To be fair to them, I think there was some naivety with the wording and they meant new as in different visitors, not more.

“They are working hard and they have done literally everything I have asked to help traffic.” The report submitted for the panel lists a large number of traffic measures to be explored next year by Legoland and the Royal Borough including further traffic trials, more signage of alternative routes and investigating running shuttle buses between the park and hotel.

The plan will still have to be approved by panel, which has the power to overrule the officers.

Cllr Cynthia Endacott, panel member and Clewer north representative, said: “I understand a Legoland or Merlin Group representative will be there to talk about what they are doing to avoid traffic. They have got to come up with some pretty good reasons to convince people I think.” The meeting will be held at The Guildhall in High Street, Windsor, from 7pm.

Other plans up for discussion include proposals to convert the old Avon Cosmetics offices in Thames Street, into eight apartments which have been recommended for approval and an application to convert the former Fawn pub in St Leonard’s Road, into four terraced houses has been recommended for refusal on parking grounds.

Permission has already been granted for three townhouses and a maisonette.
