A SPECIAL literary guest made a well-received appearance at a school on Tuesday.

Children's author and illustrator Mini Grey visited Alexander First School, in Broom Farm Estate, Windsor, to talk to the youngsters about her work.

The author spoke to 50 pupils aged five to nine about how she writes her books, how she develops characters and even gave a masterclass in illustrating, with the pupils encouraged to draw cupcakes in her own distinctive style.

Headteacher Gill Young said: "It was a great experience for the children and they really enjoyed themselves."

The visit came about through the 'Reading Force' project which encourages parents and children associated with the Armed Forces - of which many pupils at the school are - to read together.
