Toy Story 3: Disney Pixar proves it still has the magic touch

Disney Pixar's newest offering, Toy Story 3, the latest in the Toy Story franchise, hits UK cinema screens later this summer. The heady combination of the continuation of a fantastically told story, wonderful characters and a word-perfect script promises to result in quite a spectacle.

This is enhanced by the movie's impressive 3D effects and it being the first to utilise the new and improved Dolby 7.1 sound system. This has so far proved a success in the US and Canada, where cinema-goers have already flocked in their droves to experience the latest instalment in the lives of Andy and his toys.

That so many UK fans of the trilogy of films are eagerly awaiting this latest episode of the adventures of Woody and Buzz Lightyear will not come as a great surprise. Over the past 15 years Disney Pixar has proven its ability time and time again in creating the finest computer generated feature films, ones that have enchanted cinema audiences of all ages.

The story of Disney Pixar begins with Toy Story, the 1995 $30 million budget computer generated production that got the ball rolling. The director of the first two films in the series, John Lasseter, and his backers hoped the film would be a modest success and recoup enough of its budget to perhaps make another. Upon release, the enchanting tale of Andy and his toys quickly became a box office sensation, grossing more than 12 times its original budget worldwide.

It would not prove to be an isolated success for the company. Since Toy Story's release, Disney Pixar has created and released some of the finest feature films in recent times. The Incredibles, Monsters Inc, WALL-E, Up!, Finding Nemo, Cars and of course Toy Story 2 all proved to be massive box office successes.

Many speculated as to the reason for this. Was it Disney Pixar's innate technical wizardry that so appealed to its growing base of fans? Certainly the technical innovations over the past 20 years have helped produce the films to the flawless standard required. Disney Pixar has always been quick to plan, develop and embrace new technology.

However, there is a much more fundamental reason why Disney Pixar films, and in particular the Toy Story franchise, has enjoyed such enduring popularity. The true genius doesn't lie in the technical wizardry, but in the age-old process of telling a simple, yet affecting, story in an interesting, amusing and emotive way.

Toy Story 3 certainly fulfils that simple criteria as it looks chiefly at what will happen to the toys when their owner considers himself too old to play with them. It's a simple enough premise, but one which opens up a whole avenue of possibilities and strikes a resonant chord with the generation of Toy Story fans, who are now a tad older from when the first film was released and perhaps encountering this emotional and uncertain period in their lives themselves.

Add to that a perfect script that appeals across the generations, a strong cast and a fantastic, engaging storyline and this completes the perfect mixture that is now a hallmark of a classic Disney Pixar feature film.

Toy Story 3 is the latest offering and hits our screens in the UK soon and its release will once again underline that Disney Pixar has not lost the magic touch when it comes to creating feature films that will engross and entertain a generation.
