Holyport hammered
Football
IT WAS a disappointing weekend for Holyport as they crashed to a 4-0 home defeat against Newbury on Saturday in Hellenic League Division One East.
Port manager Jason Andrews’ hopes of building on last season’s good form quickly evaporated when his sides familiar defensive failings resurfaced.
His team found themselves one down after just 30 seconds, which shocked Port into what was to become their only effort on goal of the first half when Rapley’s shot narrowly missed the post.
And with Newbury playing some delightful football it came as no surprise when they increased their lead after ten minutes. Port were now in complete disarray and were it not for the heroic efforts of young keeper Walsh could have gone in at half time five down instead of two.
Andrews brought on debutant Lee Jerrum at the break to add some energy to the attack in place of Butler, and to give the lively Jamie Wright some much needed support against a well drilled Newbury defence.
Strong words must have been said at half-time as Port looked more determined in the second period and Jerrum fired just wide on 52 minutes.
Adam North then gave a weak pass back to his keeper Walsh and a Newbury forward intercepted only to be thwarted by the impressive Walsh who saved at his feet, Newbury subsequently scored their third after 67 minutes to dent any hope of Port getting back into the game and the visitors also hit the home side’s cross-bar shortly after.
The final nail in the coffin came when Newbury’s number 10 scored his third and Newbury’s fourth.
Captain Emlyn Hill playing his 100th game for the club found himself replaced by Plowman on 70 minutes, but it was now a bridge to far for Port against a very impressive Newbury outfit.
