Magpies flying

MAIDENHEAD United made it seven points from a possible nine on Saturday with a 2-1 home win over Braintree Town.

The result leaves the Magpies in sixth place in the Conference South table and was mainly thanks to two goals from striker Richard Pacquette. The York Road side went into the match missing defenders Mark Nisbet and Grant Cooper through injury, with Jermaine Hinds coming into the team to partner Dominic Sterling at the back.

And the hosts made a great start when after just two minutes, Pacquette rose at the far post to head in Ashley Smith’s deep corner.

Braintree reponded to this early shock and took control of the game for the next 20 minutes. Their pressure paid off in the 16th minute when the visitor’s Louis Riddle picked up a loose ball and finished well past Shane Gore.

Although Maidenhead gradually fought their way back into the match, there were no further goals before half-time, and the second half became a tense battle as Braintree were happy to allow the Magpies possession and look to hit them on the break.

Despite this, the home side’s persistence eventually paid off when with around four minutes remaining a free-kick was rolled to Pacquette, and the former Havant & Waterlooville man drilled the ball into the net.

Braintree could have snatched a draw with the very last kick of the game, but a Gareth Williams shot was superbly saved by Gore, and the hosts held on for another impressive victory.

Next up for Maidenhead is a trip to face 19th placed Bognor Regis Town on Saturday.
