Olympic boost for Burnett
Swimming
WINDSOR Swimming Club’s Simon Burnett made a splash in the Water Cube in the Beijing Olympic Games as the record books were ripped up.
Burnett was part of 4x100m freestyle team that excelled themselves to make the final in the early hours of Monday morning and break the national record more than once.
The 25-year-old also broke his 100m British freestyle record in the lead-off leg, recording 48.20.
In the final, Burnett, Adam Brown, Ben Hockin and Ross Davenport finished eighth, however their time of 3:12.87 would have won the gold medal at the Olympics in Athens four years ago.
“It was unbelievable,” said the head coach at Windsor Swimming Club, Matt Heathcock.
“It’s the fastest he’s been since he broke the British record at the Commonwealth Games in 2007. He broke the British record by 0.3 - for him it’s a hell of a drop."
He added: “It is an absolute pleasure to have Simon involved with Windsor Swimming Club,” stated Heathcock who continued to praise Burnett. “He is an inspiration to the kids and always has time for them.
