Amputee PC's charity trek
By Inderdeep Bains
A COURAGEOUS Windsor police officer is preparing to join cricketing legend Sir Ian Botham on a charity walk, just one year after losing his leg in a horrific accident.
Martin Bell, who is an operations and events officer at Windsor Police Station, had his right leg amputated after he was involved in a collision with a van as he cycled to work.
The 46-year-old, who started to walk unaided in April, is now bravely taking on a challenge to walk over seven miles along side Sir Ian in a fundraising walk for Leukaemia Research on Saturday, October 11, in Windsor.
Mr Bell, who is doing the walk in memory of his father, Edwin who died from the disease in 2004, said: “The walk will coincide with the anniversary of the collision and ever since it happened I have been setting myself little targets to get active again and this is one of them.
“Another very important reason for me to take part is that my father died of leukaemia four years ago so this is a charity close to my heart and I know he would have been very proud of me.”
‘Beefy’s Great British Walk - Against Childhood Leukaemia’ is starting in Taunton and is followed by Windsor and seven other towns.
Sir Ian will start the walk outside event sponsor Marks and Spencer’s on Peascod Street and will meet walkers at Windsor Great Park for an eight-mile trek.
Mr Bell has raised more than £2,000 of his £5,000 target. To sponsor him visit his website at http://www.justgiving.com/martinbell3
