DEVELOPMENT teams from across Berkshire and Buckinghamshire took part in an inaugural 10-a-side tournament hosted at Phoenix Rugby Club on Saturday.
Teams representing Phoenix 2s, Slough 3s, Redingensians Rams 5s and Farnham Royal, whose side included a smattering of Maidenhead players, took part in a day of good-natured yet competitive rugby.
The tournament was organised as a part of the Return to Rugby campaign at Phoenix, which is designed to encourage people of all ages and standards to give the sport a try in the New Year.
Phoenix 2s ran out winners after romping to victories in all of their matches however the main aim of the event was to promote a collective enjoyment of the game within the community.
Phoenix player-coach Tony Porter commented: "We pride ourselves on being an extremely inclusive club and this was a great example of how rugby can bring people together.
"It was a thoroughly enjoyable day for all involved, although having just 10 players per side meant that it was tough going for some of the lads. At least they enjoyed a well-earned pint afterwards."
The next in what is hoped to be a series of 10-a-side tournaments will take place on Saturday 23rd March.
The Return to Rugby campaign was kick-started two weeks ago when England Women star Amy Wilson Hardy paid a visit to the Institute Road ground to lead an action-packed training session.
The session, which involved drills designed to help develop handling skills, positioning and on-pitch communication, was attended by players from Phoenix, Slough and Farnham Royal.
Phoenix saw their home game against Winslow in the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Championship cancelled on Saturday due to the away team not being able to field a side.
Phoenix were duly awarded the walkover win and stand in fifth position in the league table ahead of a trip to title-chasing Abingdon this Saturday.
